AKT 3

AKT 3 from Lupin is a prescription anti-tuberculosis tablet that combines three TB medicines in one: rifampicin, isoniazid and ethambutol. It is commonly used in the intensive phase of TB treatment, when stronger cover is needed against the bacteria.

• Intensive-phase treatment of pulmonary (lung) tuberculosis
• Treatment of TB in other parts of the body as advised
• Part of long-course TB therapy under DOTS or doctor's care

Rifampicin blocks the enzyme TB bacteria need to copy their genetic code. Isoniazid weakens the bacteria's protective cell wall by stopping mycolic acid build-up. Ethambutol disturbs another step in the cell wall's structure. By hitting the bacteria in three different ways, the combo lowers the chance that the TB germs become resistant.

Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The tablets are usually taken once a day on an empty stomach, at the same time every day. Do not stop or change the dose, even if you feel better. Missing doses can make TB harder to cure.

• Nausea, vomiting or stomach upset
• Orange-red colour in urine, sweat or tears (harmless, due to rifampicin)
• Tingling or numbness in hands or feet
• Vision changes, including trouble seeing colours (ethambutol)
• Liver function changes or skin rash

Regular liver tests and eye check-ups are advised during treatment. Report any blurring of vision or trouble telling colours apart at once. Avoid alcohol. Rifampicin can lower the effect of birth-control pills, blood thinners and some HIV medicines, so tell your doctor about all other medicines. A vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) supplement may be advised to prevent nerve problems.

Store below 25 degrees Celsius in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and moisture. Keep the strip in its pack and out of reach of children.
