About
Acivir Cream from Cipla is a 5% acyclovir cream meant for cold sores (herpes labialis) on the lips and around the mouth. The 10 gm tube is handy to keep at home or in the bag for early use at the first tingle of a cold sore.
Uses
- Cold sores on lips and mouth corners
- Early tingling stage of herpes labialis
- Helps reduce blistering and crusting
- Shortens healing time
How it works
Applied to the skin, acyclovir is taken up by virus-infected cells and blocks the herpes virus from making its DNA. This slows the outbreak so blisters heal faster and the next flare-up is often milder.
How to take
Clean and dry the area, then dab a thin layer on the cold sore using a clean finger or cotton bud. Apply as often as advised on the pack, usually five times a day for about five days. Wash hands before and after.
Side effects
- Mild stinging or burning on application
- Slight dryness or flaking of skin
- Rarely, redness or itching
Precautions
Use only on lips and skin around the mouth, not inside the mouth, in the eyes or on broken skin. Avoid touching the sore and then other body parts. Start at the very first tingling for best effect. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should check with a doctor first.
Storage
Keep the tube tightly closed in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and out of reach of children.
