About
Akurit 4 by Lupin is a four-drug fixed-dose tablet used in the intensive phase of tuberculosis treatment. It combines Ethambutol, Isoniazid, Pyrazinamide and Rifampicin so a patient takes one set of tablets instead of four different bottles.
Uses
- Intensive phase of TB treatment (first 2 months usually)
- Active pulmonary tuberculosis
- Helps reduce risk of drug resistance
How it works
All four medicines attack TB bacteria in different ways — Rifampicin blocks RNA, Isoniazid and Pyrazinamide damage the cell wall, Ethambutol stops the protective coat. Hitting the bug from four sides clears infection faster and stops resistance.
How to take
Take as prescribed by your doctor, generally once daily on an empty stomach. Do not miss doses — irregular intake is the biggest reason TB returns stronger.
Side effects
- Nausea, vomiting, appetite loss
- Orange-red colouring of body fluids
- Joint pain (from Pyrazinamide)
- Liver function changes
- Numbness in hands/feet, vision changes
Precautions
Inform your doctor about liver disease, gout, diabetes, pregnancy or alcohol use. Rifampicin can weaken oral contraceptives — discuss back-up options. Regular liver tests and eye check-ups are important.
Storage
Keep below 25°C, away from moisture, sunlight and children.
