About
AKT 4 by Lupin is a four-in-one anti-tuberculosis tablet. Each tablet brings together isoniazid, rifampicin, ethambutol and pyrazinamide — the standard first-line drugs doctors use to treat active TB.
Uses
- Treatment of newly diagnosed pulmonary tuberculosis
- Treatment of certain forms of extra-pulmonary TB
- Used during the intensive phase of TB therapy
How it works
Each of the four medicines attacks the TB bacteria in a different way. Some kill bacteria that are actively dividing, while pyrazinamide works on dormant bacteria hiding inside cells. Using them together knocks the infection down quickly and helps prevent drug resistance.
How to take
Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually on an empty stomach with water. Do not skip doses or stop early, even if you feel better — TB needs the full course to be cured properly.
Side effects
- Nausea, loss of appetite or stomach upset
- Orange-red colour in urine, sweat or tears (from rifampicin, harmless)
- Tingling or numbness in hands and feet
- Joint pain
- Skin rash or itching
- Yellowing of eyes or skin (tell your doctor immediately)
Precautions
Tell your doctor about any liver, kidney or eye problems before starting. Avoid alcohol during treatment. Pregnant women, nursing mothers and people on other medicines (including birth control pills, which may become less effective) should mention this to the doctor. Periodic liver tests and eye check-ups are usually advised.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 25 degrees Celsius, away from sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
