About
Rcin contains Rifampicin, a rifamycin-family antibiotic used at the heart of tuberculosis treatment. It is taken alongside other anti-TB medicines as part of a complete regimen.
Uses
- Treats tuberculosis in combination with other anti-TB drugs
- Used in leprosy regimens
- Helps clear meningococcal bacteria from the throat in close contacts
How it works
Rifampicin stops a bacterial enzyme needed to copy genetic information, halting bacterial growth so the body can clear the infection.
How to take
Take as prescribed by your doctor. Usually swallowed whole with water on an empty stomach, at least an hour before food.
Side effects
- Orange-red colour in urine, sweat, and tears (harmless)
- Nausea or stomach upset
- Skin rash or itching
- Changes in liver function tests
Precautions
Tell your doctor about any liver problems, alcohol use, and all other medicines you take, as Rifampicin interacts with many drugs including hormonal contraceptives. Do not stop the course early.
Storage
Store below 25 degrees Celsius in a dry place away from sunlight. Keep out of reach of children.
