About
Neosporin H Ear Drops from GSK (Glaxo) combine the antibiotic Neomycin with the steroid Hydrocortisone. The drops are prescribed for outer-ear infections with swelling, itching or discharge.
Uses
- Outer-ear infections (otitis externa)
- Itchy, inflamed ear canal
- Allergic ear conditions
- Infected eczema of the ear
How it works
Neomycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that kills the bacteria causing the ear infection. Hydrocortisone is a mild steroid that calms redness, swelling and itching, so symptoms improve faster.
How to take
Use as prescribed by your doctor. Warm the bottle in your hand before use, tilt the affected ear upward, place the drops and stay still for a couple of minutes. Do not insert anything into the ear canal.
Side effects
- Mild stinging or burning in the ear
- Itching
- Skin rash around the ear
- Rarely, dryness of the ear canal
Precautions
Do not use if your eardrum is perforated, unless the doctor advises. Avoid long use as it can lead to resistant infections or fungal overgrowth. Inform the doctor about any allergy to aminoglycoside antibiotics.
Storage
Store below 25°C, away from direct sunlight. Once opened, use within the period advised by your pharmacist and keep the cap tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children.
