Melmet 500 SR from Micro Labs is a sustained-release tablet of metformin, a first-line oral medicine for type 2 diabetes from the biguanide class.

• Helps manage blood sugar in type 2 diabetes
• Often used in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) for insulin resistance
• May be combined with diet and exercise

Metformin lowers the amount of sugar made by the liver and helps the body's cells respond better to insulin, so glucose is taken in from the blood more effectively.

Swallow whole with water, usually with or after a meal, as prescribed by your doctor. Do not crush or chew the sustained-release tablet.

• Nausea, loose stools or stomach upset
• Metallic taste in the mouth
• Reduced appetite
• Long-term use may lower vitamin B12

Not suitable if you have severe kidney or liver problems. Inform your doctor before scans using contrast dye and before surgery. Limit alcohol while on treatment.

Store in a cool, dry place below 25 degrees Celsius, away from sunlight and moisture.
