Muout Powder from Dr Reddy's contains polyethylene glycol 3350, an osmotic laxative widely used to relieve constipation in adults and children. It is taken after mixing with water and works gently over hours.

Polyethylene glycol pulls water into the bowel without being absorbed itself. The extra water softens the stool and increases its volume, which gently stimulates a natural bowel movement.

Dissolve as prescribed by your doctor in plain water and drink straight away. Drink enough fluids through the day for best effect.

• Loose stools or wind, especially in the first few days

Avoid in bowel obstruction or severe abdominal pain of unknown cause. Tell your doctor if diarrhoea is persistent or there is blood in the stool.
