About
Actrapid from Novo Nordisk is a prescription short-acting human insulin used in adults and children with diabetes. It is a clear solution given by injection to help control blood sugar, especially around meals.
Uses
- Type 1 diabetes
- Type 2 diabetes needing insulin
- Diabetes in pregnancy under medical care
- Blood sugar control during illness or surgery
How it works
Actrapid is regular human insulin. After injection, it starts working within about 30 minutes and helps the body move sugar from blood into cells, where it is used for energy. Its effect lasts for several hours, so it mainly covers meal-time sugar rises.
How to take
Use as prescribed by your doctor. Inject under the skin of the abdomen, thigh, arm or buttock about 30 minutes before a meal. Change the injection spot each time and never share needles or vials.
Side effects
- Low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia)
- Weight gain
- Injection site redness or itching
- Skin thickening at repeated spots
- Rare allergic reaction
Precautions
Do not use if the liquid is cloudy, lumpy or coloured. Carry sugar or sweets in case of hypoglycaemia. Inform the doctor about other medicines, kidney or liver problems, and any plans for pregnancy. Eat on time after the injection.
Storage
Store unopened vials in the fridge at 2 to 8°C. Do not freeze. The vial in use can be kept at room temperature below 30°C, away from heat and sunlight, for the period stated by the manufacturer.
