About
Mixtard from Novo Nordisk is a prescription premixed human insulin used in adults and children with diabetes. This 40 IU per ml vial is a lower-strength format used in patients on the older 40 IU syringe system.
Uses
- Type 1 diabetes
- Type 2 diabetes needing insulin
- Mixed control of fasting and post-meal sugar
- Long-term insulin therapy
How it works
The blend contains short-acting (regular) human insulin to handle meal-time sugar rises and intermediate-acting (NPH) insulin to keep a steady background insulin level. Together they help maintain better day-long blood sugar control.
How to take
Use as prescribed by your doctor. Roll the vial gently between palms until the liquid is evenly cloudy, do not shake. Use only the 40 IU syringe matched to this strength. Inject under the skin of the abdomen, thigh, arm or buttock about 30 minutes before a meal.
Side effects
- Low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia)
- Weight gain
- Injection site redness or swelling
- Skin thickening at repeated spots
- Rare allergic reaction
Precautions
Always check the strength on the label and match the syringe (40 IU). Using a 100 IU syringe with this vial can be dangerous. Carry sugar for low blood sugar. Inform your doctor of all other medicines and health conditions.
Storage
Store unopened vials in the fridge at 2 to 8°C. Do not freeze. The vial in use can be kept at room temperature below 30°C, away from heat and sunlight, for the period stated by the manufacturer.
