Product information
About
Mixtard 30 from Novo Nordisk is a prescription premixed human insulin containing 30 percent short-acting (regular) insulin and 70 percent intermediate-acting (NPH) insulin. It is used in adults and children with diabetes who need both meal-time and background insulin in one shot.
Uses
- Type 1 diabetes
- Type 2 diabetes needing insulin
- Mixed control of fasting and post-meal sugar
- Long-term insulin therapy
How it works
The regular insulin part begins to lower blood sugar within about 30 minutes and covers the meal. The NPH part is absorbed more slowly and works through the day or night, giving a steady background level of insulin.
How to take
Use as prescribed by your doctor. Roll the vial gently between palms until the liquid looks evenly cloudy, do not shake. Inject under the skin of the abdomen, thigh, arm or buttock, usually about 30 minutes before a meal. Change the injection spot each time.
Side effects
- Low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia)
- Weight gain
- Injection site redness or swelling
- Skin thickening with repeat use at same spot
- Rare allergic reaction
Precautions
Check that you are using the right strength (100 IU per ml here). Carry sugar in case of hypoglycaemia. Inform your doctor of kidney, liver, thyroid problems and any other medicines. Eat on time after injecting.
Storage
Store unopened vials in the fridge at 2 to 8°C. Do not freeze. The vial in use can be kept at room temperature below 30°C, away from heat and sunlight, for the period stated by the manufacturer.
