About
Osteofos 35 from Cipla contains alendronic acid, a medicine that belongs to a group called bisphosphonates. It is used to treat and help prevent osteoporosis, a condition where the bones become weak and break more easily, particularly in women after menopause.
Uses
- Osteoporosis in women after menopause
- Steroid-induced osteoporosis, as advised
- Reducing the risk of fractures of the spine and hip
- Some other bone-thinning conditions, as prescribed
How it works
Alendronic acid attaches to the surface of the bones and slows down the cells (osteoclasts) that break bone down. This allows bone-building cells to keep up better, increasing bone density over time and helping make the skeleton stronger and less likely to fracture.
How to take
Take as prescribed by your doctor. This medicine is typically taken first thing in the morning on an empty stomach with a full glass of plain water. After taking, stay upright (sitting or standing) and avoid food, drink or other medicines for the time period your doctor advises, to help absorption and protect the food pipe.
Side effects
- Heartburn, indigestion or stomach pain
- Difficulty or pain on swallowing
- Muscle, bone or joint aches
- Headache or mild dizziness
- Rarely, jaw bone problems or unusual thigh-bone fractures
Precautions
Tell your doctor if you have problems with your food pipe, low calcium levels, kidney disease, ongoing dental issues, or are pregnant or breastfeeding. Maintain good dental hygiene and inform your dentist that you are on this medicine. Avoid lying down soon after taking the tablet.
Storage
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep tablets in the original strip and out of reach of children.
