Product information
About
Abhayrab is a rabies vaccine given as an injection. It protects people against rabies, a serious infection spread through the saliva of infected animals, usually by a bite or scratch. A trained healthcare worker gives it, either beforehand to high-risk people or right after a suspected exposure.
Uses
- Prevents rabies after an animal bite or scratch
- Protects high-risk people like vets and animal handlers
- Given with rabies immunoglobulin in high-risk bites
How it works
It contains an inactivated (killed) rabies virus. This trains your immune system to build protection, so your body can fight the real virus if you are ever exposed. It cannot give you rabies.
How to take
Given by a doctor or nurse as an injection into the muscle, on a fixed schedule of days. Never skip a dose. Follow the full course your doctor sets.
Side effects
- Pain, redness or swelling where injected
- Mild fever, headache or tiredness
- Occasionally joint pain or hives; seek medical help for any severe allergic reaction
Precautions
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, unwell with fever, or have ever had a bad reaction to a vaccine. Given only under medical supervision.
Storage
Store in the fridge between 2°C and 8°C. Do not freeze. Keep away from children.
