About
Osteofos 70 from Cipla contains alendronic acid, a bisphosphonate medicine used to treat and help prevent osteoporosis. It is often prescribed once a week to strengthen bones and reduce the risk of fractures, especially in women after menopause.
Uses
- Osteoporosis in women after menopause
- Steroid-induced osteoporosis, as advised
- Lowering the risk of spine and hip fractures
- Other bone-thinning conditions, as prescribed
How it works
Alendronic acid binds to the surface of the bone and slows down the cells (osteoclasts) that break bone down. This gives bone-building cells more time to add new bone, gradually increasing bone density and making the skeleton stronger and less likely to fracture.
How to take
Take as prescribed by your doctor. Typically, this tablet is taken first thing in the morning on an empty stomach with a full glass of plain water. Stay upright (sitting or standing) and avoid food, drink or other medicines for the time period your doctor advises, so the medicine is absorbed well and the food pipe is protected.
Side effects
- Heartburn, indigestion or stomach pain
- Difficulty or pain when swallowing
- Muscle, bone or joint aches
- Headache or mild dizziness
- Rarely, jaw bone problems or unusual thigh-bone fractures
Precautions
Let your doctor know if you have problems with your food pipe, low calcium levels, kidney disease, ongoing dental issues, or are pregnant or breastfeeding. Take good care of your teeth and gums, and tell your dentist you are using this medicine. Do not lie down soon after taking the tablet.
Storage
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep tablets in the original strip and out of reach of children.
