Tegrital CR 200 from Novartis is a controlled-release capsule of carbamazepine, an anticonvulsant that calms over-firing nerves to help control seizures and certain nerve-pain conditions.

• Epilepsy and certain seizure types
• Trigeminal neuralgia (facial nerve pain)
• Mood-stabilising support in some psychiatric conditions

Carbamazepine quietens excitable sodium channels in nerve cells, so abnormal electrical bursts that trigger seizures or nerve pain settle down. The CR (controlled-release) form spreads the dose more evenly through the day.

Swallow the capsule whole as prescribed by your doctor, with food to ease stomach upset. Don't crush or chew. Don't stop suddenly.

• Drowsiness, dizziness, or unsteady walking
• Nausea or mild stomach upset
• Blurred or double vision early in treatment

Tell your doctor about liver, blood, heart, or skin conditions, and any rash that appears. Avoid alcohol. Don't combine with new medicines without checking, as interactions are common.
