About
Aldactone 25 contains Spironolactone 25 mg, a lower-strength version of the well-known potassium-sparing diuretic. It is often started at this dose for heart failure or sensitive patients.
Uses
- Heart failure (improves symptoms and survival)
- High blood pressure as add-on therapy
- Fluid build-up in liver disease
- Hormonal acne (specialist advised)
How it works
It blocks aldosterone in the kidneys, so excess sodium and water are flushed out while potassium is preserved. This eases swelling, lowers BP and reduces strain on the heart.
How to take
Take as prescribed by your doctor, with food, preferably in the morning.
Side effects
- Frequent urination initially
- Breast tenderness in men/women
- Dizziness
- Raised blood potassium
- Stomach upset
Precautions
Avoid large amounts of potassium-rich foods and supplements. Tell your doctor about kidney disease, pregnancy or use of ACE inhibitors/ARBs. Regular blood tests for potassium and kidney function are needed.
