About
Acitrom 4 mg from Abbott is the higher-strength acenocoumarol tablet, prescribed when smaller doses are not enough to keep the INR in target. The 30-tablet strip is meant for people already stabilised on this dose.
Uses
- Prevents clots in atrial fibrillation
- Maintenance after valve replacement
- Treats deep vein thrombosis
- Lowers risk of pulmonary embolism
How it works
Acenocoumarol blocks vitamin K-dependent clotting factor production in the liver. With these factors kept low in a controlled way, blood takes longer to clot, lowering the risk of strokes and other clot-related problems.
How to take
Take as prescribed by your doctor. Dose changes are guided by regular INR blood tests.
Side effects
- Easy bruising or bleeding gums
- Nosebleeds
- Heavier menstrual flow
- Rarely, blood in urine or stool
Precautions
Never stop or change the dose on your own. Watch for unusual bleeding, dark stools or persistent headache and report them quickly. Avoid alcohol excess and check before any new medicine. Not safe in pregnancy.
Storage
Keep in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and out of reach of children.
