About
Zyloric 100 is a GSK tablet containing allopurinol, a xanthine oxidase inhibitor used to lower uric acid levels in the body. It is a long-term, preventive medicine rather than a treatment for sudden attacks.
Uses
- Long-term control of gout
- Prevention of recurrent uric acid kidney stones
- High uric acid linked to certain cancer treatments
- Selected enzyme disorders that raise uric acid
How it works
Allopurinol blocks xanthine oxidase, the enzyme that converts purines from food and from cell turnover into uric acid. With less uric acid being made, levels in the blood fall, crystals dissolve over time, and gout attacks become less frequent.
How to take
Take as prescribed by your doctor, after food and with plenty of water to protect the kidneys. Keep taking it daily even when you feel well, since stopping can trigger flares.
Side effects
- Skin rash, sometimes serious
- Stomach upset or nausea
- Headache or drowsiness
- Rare but serious hypersensitivity reactions
Precautions
Tell your doctor about kidney problems, a history of severe drug reactions, or use of azathioprine or mercaptopurine. Stop and seek urgent care for any spreading rash, peeling skin, or fever after starting.
Storage
Store below 25 degrees Celsius in a dry place, away from sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
