About this test
The Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP) test measures the level of AFP, a protein normally produced by the liver and yolk sac of a developing fetus. In adults, elevated AFP levels can be a marker for certain types of cancer, especially liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma) and germ cell tumors. This test is also used during pregnancy to help detect certain fetal abnormalities.
